Bi-Level Virtue Epistemology

چکیده
But beginning with his work in the late 1970s, Sosa takes a different approach to the debate between foundationalists and coherentists over the structure of knowledge. (Indeed, Sosa takes this different approach to a number of long-standing disputes in philosophy.) Rather than assuming the sides are talking past one another, Sosa suggests that each side has identi fi ed part of the truth, but missed out on the bigger picture:

Sosa’s bi-level virtue epistemology
Ernest Sosa has long defended bi-level virtue epistemology on the grounds that it offers the best overall treatment of epistemology’s central issues. A surprising number of problems “yield to” the approach (Sosa 1991: 9). Sosa applies bi-level virtue epistemology to diagnose and bypass ongoing disputes in contemporary epistemology, including the disputes between foundationalists and coherentist...

Duncan Pritchard (et al. 2010, 2012a, 2012b) has recently shifted his view from an account that primarily understands knowledge in terms of the safety principle (a view mainly developed in his 2005 monograph on epistemic luck) to an ‘impure’ variety of virtue epistemology, which combines the safety principle with a weakened virtue-theoretic condition, a view that he calls anti-luck virtue epist...
متن کاملA Counterexample to the Robust and Anti-luck Virtue Epistemologies
This paper begins with an introduction to four different prominent versions of process reliabilism about knowledge, namely, the simple K-reliabilism, John Greco’s robust virtue epistemology, Duncan Pritchard’s anti-luck virtue epistemology, and the Goldmanian Kreliabilism. Its main objective is to offer a counterexample, namely, the fewer barn façades case, to the anti-luck virtue epistemology,...

متن کاملResponsibilist Virtues and the ‘ Charmed Inner Circle ’ of Traditional Epistemology
Ernie Sosa’s unique brand of performance-based virtue epistemology continues to mature. His fourth book in epistemology in twice as many years, Judgment and Agency (2015) deepens and extends Sosa’s previous work on the nature and value of knowledge. The result is impressive. Judgment and Agency reads like a product of sustained, penetrating philosophical reflection by one of the great minds in ...
